Meghalaya Congress Resounds Its Anti-NDA Bugles Over Demonetization

SHILLONG: It is a known fact that PM Narendra Modi’s surgical attack on black money has drawn flaks from many quarters particularly the opposition parties as evident from the continuous disruption over the issue of demonetization in both the houses of the Parliament during the ongoing winter session, who maintained that the ‘motive’ was appreciated, however, the implementation of the same was a ‘mistake’ hitting the poor and marginal section of the society.

But the demonetization of higher currency notes also received wide appreciation from various section of the society who felt that the ‘bold move of the PM is perhaps one of the most historic decisions in the country’.

Similarly, in Meghalaya, PM Modi’s move received mixed response. While some are in support of demonetization, others are directly hitting at the so called ‘unplanned’ move of the prime minister. And political parties are no strangers when it comes to supporting or criticizing the move.

On Monday, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) responded to the nationwide call for ‘Aakrosh Diwas’ against the central government over demonetization by organizing a protest.  Slogans were raised by the protesters against the BJP-led union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Large number of youth congress volunteers and women workers along with Meghalaya Pradesh congress leaders gathered at Dhankheti in Shillong and condemned the demonetization strategy of BJP led NDA Government.

MPCC was represented by its President DD Lapang while, Congress led Meghalaya Government was represented by Taxation Minister Zenith Sangma. Addressing Media, Sangma said “This protest against demonstration was organised as part of the nation-wide strike to protest against the  Wrong doings of NDA govt,” even as he accused NDA Government for messing up the situation which has led to misery to every house hold in the country.

While stating that demonetization will have a negative impact on the GDP growth of the country, Sangma informed that during his recent meeting with finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the finance agreed that GDP will be  down by two percent and there will be recession in the coming six months or one year.

“Central government has messed up the situation and they are not able to control the damage now. Even BJP leaders are also facing the heat,” he said, adding, “Even our State Govt is against corruption which is why we came up with Lokayuktya bill.”

Stating that Congress is not in favour of politicizing the issue, MPCC President DD lapang said people are suffering in their day to day life starting from marketing to school fees.

“We have exercised our mind and we do not want to politicize things,” Lapang said adding, “People are suffering in their day to day life.”

He also stated that with the onset of the festive season, marriage engagements, church festivities, farmers are suffering. “The idea is not bad but timing and implementation process is worst,” the MPCC chief said.
