5 facts about the gun that killed Bin Laden

In the special operations community the biggest secret which loomed large, what was the weapon that the SEALs employed to eliminate Bin Laden?

The HK416 was made famous as the gun that United States Navy SEALs used to eliminate the world’s most wanted man Osama Bin Laden.

Here are five facts about the assault rifle:

1.The United States Army’s Delta Force, at the request of R&D NCO Larry Vickers, collaborated with the German arms maker Heckler & Koch to develop the new carbine in the early 1990s. The project was originally called the HK M4, but this was changed in response to a trademark infringement suit filed by Colt Defense.

2. Delta Force replaced its M4s with the HK416 in 2004, after tests revealed that the piston operating system significantly reduces malfunctions while increasing the life of parts. The resulting weapon is said to be less prone to malfunction.

3.  HK416s are available with 4 different barrel lengths and a set of rails allow the fitting of aiming devices, illumination devices and grips as well as a AG416 40mm grenade launcher.

4.  HK416 allegedly uses 5.56mm NATO 77-grain OTM (open-tip match) rounds made by Black Hills Ammunition.

5. The FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) have also been spotted using the HK416 which also include other users from NASA Emergency Response Teams, and Los Angeles Police Department (SWAT)
