Imphal, March 13 2017: A fresh twist has emerged in the battle for the throne in Manipur as incumbent Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh refuses to tender his resignation.
Congress chief minister Ibobi refused to quit and maintained that he has the majority number to form the government.
Meanwhile, the BJP is currently awaiting a notification to be issued by the Election Commission of India.
Out of the total 60 assembly constituency seats, the BJP won 21 seats and claimed to have managed to get the support of 11 more MLAs taking the total to 32. 31 seats are required to form the government in Manipur.
Earlier, the BJP organised a meet in Manipur where Biren Singh, T Biswajit has been chosen for the race for Chief Minister post.
The Congress managed to win 28 seats but one of its MLAs defected to the BJP on Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, the congress party has cried foul stating that this is a murder of democracy and maintained that a single largest party should form the government.
However, after directing Ibobi to submit his resignation, Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla said that she is yet received any resignation letter from the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.
Earlier, Ibobi Singh had stepped down as the leader of Congress Legislative Party in Manipur and the New Congress legislative party leader will be announced shortly.
Manipur is in for yet another toss even as both the BJP and the Congress are struggling to consolidate support in Manipur.
