NEW DELHI:

India reported its highest-ever single-day spike of COVID-19 cases with over 2.61 lakh infections and over 1,500 deaths in the last 24 hours on Sunday.

The active number of cases in the country now stands at 18,01,316.

In the last 24 hours, 1,38,423 people recovered from the disease, taking the total recoveries count to 1,28,09,643.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 15,66,394 samples were tested on Friday, and 26,65,38,416 samples have been tested across the country till April 17.

Meanwhile, the cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country stands at 12,26,22,590 till today.

Amid the growing number of COVID-19 cases, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has also approved the use of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.
