The Bangalore Police on Thursday arrested four people, including a graduation student, who allegedly molested a woman from Northeast in east Bengaluru’s Kammanahalli on January 1.
The main accused is Ayyappa, a student of ITI. He was arrested along with three others identified as Leno, a helper in private firm, Somashekar alias Chinni, a driver and Sudesh, a delivery boy.
It may be mentioned that a woman who hails from Northeast was molested just yards away from her rented apartment at Kammanahalli. This shocking act was captured in CCTV camera footage and there was a nation-wide furore to apprehend the culprits involved in this despicable act.
According to the city police commissioner Praveen Sood, they are on the hunt for two more individuals. Bangalore has seen a spate of crime against Northeast people in the last 5 years starting with the SMS threats which led to mass exodus of the Northeastern community in 2012.
Last year, a boy from Manipur was thrashed by locals for not being able to speak the local Kannada language.
While this crime is not being looked from an ethnic point of view, it is the cosmopolitan image of Bangalore which has taken a severe beating.
Talking about the survivor, Sood said cops are in touch with survivor. “We have got in touch with her following the arrest of these men. We had to take some time to build confidence and she will cooperate with the investigation.”
