The Rio Olympics are almost here with it being scheduled to start on August 5 and concluding on August 21. India has many athletes competing in the games and there are also a number of athletes from the Northeast representing India. Here are a list of 8 athletes from the region who the country has it’s eyes on.
Dipa Karmakar: This 22-year-old scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for an Olympics in gymnastics. This young girl from Tripura got recognized at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 by winning a bronze medal.She will be the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the Olympics after 52 years.
Bombayla Devi: She is an archer from Imphal East in Manipur. She represented India at the 2008 Beijing and will do so this year also. She is part of a three member archery team which will compete both as a team and as individuals.
Shiva Thapa: This 22-year-old from Assam was the youngest Indian boxer to qualify in the London Olympics 2012. This Guwahati boy is supported by the Olympic Gold Quest and is ranked third in the bantamweight category. He is a strong contender in the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Sushila Chanu: This 24-year-old will be leading the women’s Indian hockey team as she has been given the added responsibility of Captain. Sushila plays as a halfback. She hails from Manipur and has played 112 international matches for the country.
Anuradha Devi Thokchom: Anuradha Devi is a 26-year-old hockey player from Manipur who have overcome odds to make it on to the national hockey team of the country. She will be one of the four hockey players from Manipur representing the country.
Chinglensana Singh: This 23-year-old from Manipur has been selected as part of the Indian hockey team. He plays as a halfback and plays for Dabang Mumbai in the Hockey India League.His first debut for the national team was back in 2012.
Kothajit Singh: Kothajit was born on August 1992 and is a midfielder on India’s national hockey team. A midfielder who began as a forward, Singh moved to the SAI centre in Lucknow in 2009 to hone his skills and made his mark in the Ranchi National Games.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu: Another athlete from Manipur, she won a silver medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in weight lifting will be representing India at the upcoming Rio Olympics.She broke the national record which was set by herself by lifting 1 kg more (85 kg) and equalled Kunjarani Devi’s clean and jerk lift of 107 kg. Her combined lift was 192 kg which was 2 more than the record.
